Using sensor activated sound, hologram videos, anti-NFTS, collage, analog VR and workshops particiapnts can playfully dive into communicating with this once ignored collaborator. We commune with our ancestors in a variety of rituals across cultures, paying homage, asking for wisdom and support from those who came before us. At times these prayers and meditations take form in symbolic, seemingly lifeless objects embedded with powers such as totems and talismans. Some take the form of rocks that can heal our bones, venerated for their spiritual, life giving capacity and healing properties. When we shift the lens of how we relate to the ‘unliving’, an invisible choreography emerges. An electric map, a web of unseen forces, intentions, and possibilities, connects the dots of the living and the dead.Plastics have become the sacred extensions of our lives. Born of compounds from the depth ofthe Earth and our desires for instant gratification, taking shape in many forms from plasti straws, smartphones, fast fashion, beloved toys. We have become rife in toxicity as these desires now litter every crevice of our planets land, waters and wildlife. Like the Gods of old we have grown overwhelmed and angry at the disruption and dis-ease these plastics have expelled upon us.Here, I offer a challenge to the dystopia and disaster, a proposal of integration with the spirit of plastics. An embodied listening, shifting us deeper, opening our interrelatedness to include all forms of nature. A cross-species climate therapy. Instead of putting plastics in opposition to the ‘natural world’, recognize the energetic properties they carry, the force they exude. Embrace, integrate, dissolve. What they are, how they have come to be and acknowledge that they are the extension of our desires. Think of them as an extended family member, reconfigure that toxic uncle into a healthier more positive role. During chapter one you listen and interact with the sea life suddenly you begin leaving debris the longer you stay the more you impact the enviroment by leaving trails of debris. Chapter two begins near a colossal mountain of compressed micro-plastics, I found in Antarctica. Scientists verified that it filled the stomach and intestines killing a penguin and was quite common. Sounds cascading spatially recorded using a hydrophone can be heard in each photographic rock. You can arrange the rocks into compositions or listen to them individually by placing them to your ears. Chapter 3 echoes the eerie tumult of our ships' interior as we were pulled by a merciless storm into the Drake's passage for two days with a broken sail, no power or rescue in sight. This 3 week journey via a 42ft sailboat, with no heat or showers shined a light on many secrets and horrors held in this far removed and mysterious continent. The experience is achieved by using a combination of Ganzfeld sensory deprivation techniques and your voice to activate the body and interact with the reverberating frequencies. The dual chambers of your bodies cavity and that of the pod elicit a range of psycho-acoustic phenomena and vibratory journey facilitating entrances into non-ordinary states of consciousness. Passing through the participants body hearing and feeling the waves. The structure is composed of cherry and birch. The hexagonal cylinder is designed like a vacuum, oscillating the tones for optimal relational bodily conversation. To help commune with invisible landscape four adjustable LED lights are aimed at eye level. Frosted goggles are worn by participant diffusing the lights. This creates perceptual deprivation, shutting down the primary vision to produce a higher sensitivity through our other sensory organs. A ganzfeld experiment (from the German for “entire field”) is a technique used in the field of parapsychology to test individuals for extrasensory perception (ESP). The experience is a series of seven sonic sensory deprivation chambers. Individuals enter and close the chambers for an immersive physiological exploration of each unique composition. The audience participates and varies the overall audio by opening and closing different chambers transforming the composition of all 7 within the space producing a ever-morphing symphony. The chilling composition mixes samples of Octavia Butler interviews on science fiction and the human condition with those of Right-Wing hate speech by Trump, Himmler, Hitler and Richard Spencer. Butlers' writing and ideas forshadowed with uncanny accuracy the current political and social turmoil we face in the United States and globally. Together we will create a geo-gendered narrative, recording and mixing reenacted dialogues, the cityscape and foley. This work aims to provide an empathetic experience for listeners and a space of support and catharsis for participants. During the workshop, participants will learn how to use audio recording tools such as recorders, microphones, and binaural recording techniques. A mix of the collaborative audio work will be online as an MP3 download along with a map that guides the psycho-sonicscape.
